I was recently contacted by a new client who needed to create some product photography for her new brand. Its a cool new bike rack which uses bungee cords to secure the bikes. The benefit of this is no chance of scratching the bikes or vehicle, and also attaching and removing the bikes from the racks is super fast.
She needed a combination of both studio product photography and also some location images showing the bike racks in use. We started with the studio product photography with her dropping the products off to me in Mission Bay, Auckland. We discussed the style of image she was after with the product photography and I ensured I had a really good feel for the direction she want to take the marketing of the racks. Once I thought I had a solid feel for what she was looking for I took a test image with one of the racks and sent it through to her before completing the remaining product photography of the other racks.
The client was rapt with the resulting image so I completed the remaining rack in the same style. She really liked the floating effect or the product photography style I used. This effect was something we had discussed from the outset and it works really well for the products. Heres some of the other products I photographed in the studio. The first and second images below are the same rack. One with the support arms in the ready position and the second showing how they fold away to save space.

The rack below is a clever design. The rack can lever down away from the vehicle allowing the hatch to be opened without removing the bikes.
Location product photography images at Milford reserve, Auckland
As mentioned above the client needed both studio and location product photography for her marketing. After discussing this in detail and working out the needs of her business we worked out our plan of attack. The client wanted the images to help build the brand story by showing the racks in beautiful outdoor locations. I suggested some locations after researching areas that were close to her base and suited the companies marketing aims. The end location was Milford reserve in the north of Auckland. Its on the beach looking out to Rangitoto and has a green area which could also be used as a background for the images.
The client and I had talked about having the view of Rangitito as a background. The other alternative was the green trees and cliffs of the reserve. Ultimately the decision was partly made for us as that morning there was heavy fog blocking the view of Rangitito.
The below product image shows the function of the swing arm rack. This allows the back of a 4WD to be opened without removing the bikes or rack from the 4WD.
The following three images show the products handy collapsing or folding action: when not in use,
and the following image shows it loaded and in use in the unfolded position,
and the final prodcut image. This is to illustrate the lever action of the rack. Showing the rear of the vehicle can be accessed without removing the bikes or rack.
