If you’ve booked a professional headshot—or you’re thinking about it—you’re probably wondering how to prepare so you get the best possible result.
The good news? You don’t need to be “photogenic” or experienced in front of the camera. With a bit of preparation, anyone can get a confident, natural-looking headshot that works for LinkedIn, your website, marketing, or where ever it is you need your new headshot to work for you.
Here’s exactly how to prepare for a professional headshot in Auckland.
1. Choose the Right Outfit (Keep It Simple and Professional)
Your clothing should support your image—not distract from it. We want the headshot to put emphasis on your face first, and your overall look second.
What works best:
- Neutral or solid colours (navy, grey, white, black, muted tones)
- Well-fitted clothing (not too tight, not too loose)
- Classic styles over trendy pieces
What to avoid:
- Busy patterns or loud prints, these no only distract from your face/eyes, but they can display strangely in digital reproduction
- Large logos or graphics, you want the headshot to sell you, not the brand of what you are wearing
- Bright neon colours, obviously they distract, and they can clash with the colours of the marketing material you want to place the images in later on
Pro tip:
Bring 2–3 outfit options to your session so you can test what looks best on camera.

2. Dress for Your Industry
Think about how you want to be perceived.
- Corporate / legal → more formal (blazer, structured clothing)
- Creative / startup → relaxed but polished
- Personal brand → aligned with your personality and the industry you are placed within
Your headshot should match the expectations of your audience, what qualities do your potential clients, employers, or collaborators want from you

3. Grooming Matters More Than You Think
Small details make a big difference in high-resolution photography. Off-course there is retouching available after the shoot but nothing can beat having a great starting point and improving from there
Before your session:
- Get a haircut a few days before (not the same day)
- Trim facial hair neatly
- Moisturise skin
- Avoid heavy sun exposure
- Avoid sunscreen on the day of your shoot as it can lead to hotspots in your skin from the photographic lights
For makeup:
- Keep it natural and matte
- Avoid overly shiny finishes

4. Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera
Most people feel awkward at the start of their headshot session—that’s completely normal.
As a professional photographer I will guide you through the process and most people leave telling me the session was a lot more fun and less daunting then they thought it was going to be. During the shoot I will help you with:
- posture
- angles
- expression
- subtle adjustments
Simple posing tips:
- Relax your shoulders
- Slightly lean forward
- Keep your chin slightly down
- Think of a natural expression, not a forced smile
- Theres a bunch of other little tricks and tips I can help you with to help with expressions, double chins, postures. I have completed thousands of headshots and have picked up more than a few headshot hacks along the way.

5. Think About Where the Photo Will Be Used
Your preparation should match the purpose of your headshot.
Ask yourself:
- Is this for LinkedIn?
- Your company website?
- Speaking engagements?
- Personal branding?
- what colours in the headshot will work or not not work in its final use spaces
This affects:
- outfit choice
- expression
- background/ headshot style

6. Get Plenty of Rest (It Shows on Camera)
It sounds obvious, but it matters.
- Get a good night’s sleep
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid alcohol the night before
Fresh, well-rested faces always photograph better, but don’t stress too much about this. I will retouch your chosen image/s. Its always best to start from the best place and go forward from there but its amazing what can be achieved too

7. Trust Your Photographer
The biggest difference between an average and a great headshot is guidance.
A professional photographer will:
- help you relax
- direct your posing
- adjust lighting and angles
- capture natural expressions
You don’t need to “perform”—just follow their lead.

Final Thoughts
Preparing for a professional headshot isn’t complicated, but it does make a huge difference in the final result.
With the right outfit, a bit of grooming, and expert guidance, you’ll walk away with images that look confident, polished, and genuinely like you.
