A recent food photography shoot for a company based in East Tamaki in Aucklands South east. The shoot took place at one of the companies restaurants called Love Asia. The company runs a few restaurants but they also produce various frozen foods which they sell to other businesses such as petrol stations and takeaway shops.
This shoot was for the frozen food production side of the business. They needed both pack shot food photography of the frozen foods by themselves, along with some cooked food images with food styling/props etc. Both types of images were for an update to their product catalogue. The packshot food images were to show the products that businesses can buy as they are. The cooked food photographs were to give the catalogue a bit more life and colour and show how the products can be used.
Day one – packshot food photography
Day one of the shoot was set aside for the packshot food photography part of the job. I setup a white perspex background to sit the food items on. Perspex is easy to clean and it doesn’t soak up any of the oils from the fried foods, perfect for this quick paced shoot with mainly fried food products.
This style of food photography can be tricky due to its simplicity. The images are the food items and nothing else. Lighting becomes especially important to create some texture and shape in the products. There aren’t any props or backgrounds to help in constructing a composition, its just the food products and lighting.
Day two – styled food photography
The second day was set aside for the styled food photography. Images were created using a variety of props, backgrounds, and even some hands!
Not many props needed for this juicy burger. Photographed in front of one of my dark backgrounds I lifted the burger away from the background to get some separation, using depth of field to create a nice soft background and bring the burger out of the image.
I love the scattering of various food items around the chicken skewers in the shot above. some nice side light to create a little texture and make the colour pop out of the image.
I called in a few of the restaurants staff for this image. It was a bit of a balancing act to make sure the hands didn’t block the light form the food on the table and still look natural while showing the food they were holding well.
