A client based in Parnell, Auckland was doing a website refresh and as if often the case this involved refreshing their staff portraits. They are an events based company and wanted the portraits to have a slightly relaxed/not too corporate feel so chose to go with an environmental style of portrait for their Auckland staff.
Varied backgrounds, same environmental style
We used the common area of the communal office they use at the Textile loft. It is quite a large space which was great as I was able to create a different out of focus background for each of the staff members. This kept the group of portraits both different from each other, but consistent in the environmental style and overall feel which is what they were after.
The staff were all a little nervous before their portraits which is perfectly normal. They all said afterwards though that it was a much better experience than they had been building up in their minds. I like to keep it as relaxed as I can which helps people enjoy the process and the results of course are all the better for it.
What is an environmental style of staff portrait?
Environmental staff portraits have a heavily out of focus background which brings attention to the person being photographed. With a background the portraits have more of a story, and feel a little more real to life or candid than other styles of staff portraits can sometimes. The background can be one which is in the context of the business they work for, or just a pleasing background that makes the portrait work.
